Find security number with the ITAX tool

For all those who want to find a securities number quickly for tax purposes 😉, here is a tip that usually works:

  1. Visit the website the Federal Tax Administration ITAX, at start a search there
  2. Enter there the ISIN or even better the Company name on. Unfortunately, the ISIN does not always work.
  3. Check using the ISINwhether it is the correct selection. Because if you search for the company name, you can get several results. You can easily find the ISIN of your security at www.finanzen.ch Check.
  4. If the ISIN matches, copy the security number on the ITAX page.
  5. Add the Result of your valor number search in your online tax return.

UBS security number search: Example with ITAX search

Example: you want to include the UBS share in the tax return under securities and follow the instructions above:

  1. You call the ITAX website where you want to find out the UBS security number.
  2. You enter in the field "Company / Title Designation / Identification Number" Enter "UBS" in your search and you will receive several suggestions (more than 10 pages). At the top you will find a suitable security, if any, called "UBS Group AG / Registered Shares".
  3. You check the UBS security number as follows: You take the ISIN of the security and copy it to the (CH0244767585). Then you give it to www.finanzen.ch in the search and you will get the security with price information and even the security number.

ISIN number search

If you want to search for the ISIN number, it is similar to the Valor.

However, if you cannot find the ISIN number at all, the security number or the name of the security will help you. You can search for the ISIN number using the following tools and methods:

  • About the Google search, you should be able to search for and find the ISIN number.
  • If you are a Factsheet you can also find the ISIN number there.
  • Also via the official iTax tool you can find your way to ISIN via the security number, the name or the national identification number:

Valor number Tax return direct search

The Online tax return (at least in the canton of Zurich) also has its own search function for securities. However, there currently seems to be a different algorithm behind the search. Some people have already contacted us and noted that they tried to find the desired securities or security numbers, but were unsuccessful.

We replicated the example search for the UBS share and found that simply entering "UBS" found countless other stocks and the UBS registered share does not appear on page 1. If you know the ISIN or the correct securities name (UBS Group AG), the search will work.

So you could in parallel use the Open online broker with current positions and find the ISIN numbers there. The broker's tax assessment notice also helps here, of course. Alternatively, we recommend the Search page of ITAX which we have linked above.

  1. ...these are listed shares in Indonesia. One was found, two were not (search with ISIN and by name). One of the companies not found is even larger than the one found. Many thanks for a hint!

        1. I can't find a valor for this in a hurry either. The best thing to do is simply enter all the data (ISIN) etc. in the tax form and any other helpful information on a separate supplementary sheet.

    1. Not every security has a Swiss security number. In the early years, this also happened to me with some of my ETFs in my custody account, which is still in Germany, because they were not traded on the SIX. Without further ado, I always stated the ISIN in the tax return and self-declared the distributions or reinvestments. In most cases, the tax software for the next year at the latest had a matching securities number to hand.
