First of all: Here is a 13th month's wage calculator:
If you have any more questions on the topic, we look forward to an exchange in the comments!
Since the 13th month's wage nationwide is very widespread, there is a widespread belief that it is required by law. However there is a 13th month's wage compulsory so notbut it is considered as special remuneration and is a normal part of the salary. Whether an annual salary is paid in 13 or in 12 or in 15 (50% of the 13th month's salary in the summer and 50% at Christmas) salary components is entirely up to the employee.
If you can manage your money well, you might not even want a 13th month's wage.
On the contrary, some private investors would probably like to receive their entire annual salary in January in one fell swoop. This way, they can benefit from the so-called intra-year interest rate.
However, the concept of the 13th month's salary suits many people, especially if budgeting with private finances does not always work out so smoothly. Let's assume you don't necessarily need your 13th month's pay to pay the last bills from Black Friday, but can use it more sensibly. What can you use your 13th month's salary for?
Ideally, you can invest a portion of your salary each month and grow it over the long term. Ideally, this would be done automatically by standing order to a suitable investment providers. Also filling your Pillar 3a might be a good idea, should your Maximum amount not yet be reached for this year.
You should always have a reserve account for emergencies, but you do not need to fill it unnecessarily high. After all, we have inflation, so you should keep this part within reasonable limits. Donations or many other possibilities are also available for your Thirteenth of course at your disposal. Let us know in the comments what you're doing with your 13th this year.
You can calculate the thirteenth month's salary with a simple fraction calculation:
13th month's pay in the event of illness:
Since the 13th month's salary is part of the annual salary, it can only be reduced if the annual salary may be reduced. Deductions from the 13th month's salary can therefore only be made in exceptional cases. If you are sick and absent for a longer period of time, so that there is no longer any contractually agreed or statutory continued payment of wages, your salary including the thirteenth month can be reduced.
13th month's pay in the event of short-time working:
As the 13th month's wage is a special allowance, there is an entitlement to continued payment and of this wage component. In the case of short-time working (and also in the case of illness), the 13th month's wage is normally already included in the daily allowance. A later payment of the 13th month's salary may therefore actually be lower.
If an employment relationship is terminated - no matter from what side and for what reason, the employee is entitled to the 13th month's wage in the case of Cancellation proportionately.
Even termination without notice shortly after starting a new job does not change anything. The payment of the thirteenth month's wages upon termination is then due with the next wage payment and not at the end of the year.
If you have a thirteenth of a month's pay in your Employment contract you are entitled to this on a pro rata basis even in the event of termination.
The 13. wage is generally always calculated at 1/12 of the agreed annual gross salary. In case of prolonged absence, the employer may calculate and apply a reduction of the 13th month's pay in accordance with agreements and the legal framework.
But the 13th salary is not as Bonus but rather a fixed component of the annual salary and thus simply a different form of payment of the salary on your salary account. Payroll accounting.

You can simply enter your gross annual salary and receive the calculation directly.
If you only know your net salary, take a look at your salary statement.
The question also asked for instructions on how to calculate the 13th month's salary, which can be done using the calculator above.
The normal deductions are made as for the regular monthly salary. This means that AHV, ALV, NBU, KTG etc. are also deducted from the 13th month's salary.

Hello Schwiizer Franke,
Thank you for the report on the 13th month's pay.
Now I have my pay slip or the statement of the 13th month's pay in front of me.
Seems to be correct. Now I have a question about the deductions.
AHV, ALV, NBU and the KTG premium are deducted from the gross salary.
Why is the BVG not deducted from the 13th month's salary? The BVG is also deducted from "normal" payslips.
Has the personnel manager forgotten that?
Hello Carmen,
There can be several reasons for this. It's best to ask the human resources department 🙂
Hello, I would like to ask the following question: I work as a plumber's helper at a fixed wage, my working hours per day are 8.5 hours. I am about to leave the employer what he has to pay me (the current salary, the 13th salary and overtime), I realise that, but somewhere I had read that I receive my salary based on 8 hours working day and this half hour left over is carried over as a free paid day during the Christmas holidays and therefore I will not spendThese holidays with my current employer and if I leave the employer would have to pay me the accumulated half hours from the beginning of the year until the date of leaving. I hope you can explain to me how this works, because there is nothing about this in my employment contract, the contract was made in the canton of Schwyz, thank you very much!
Hello Nikolay,
The best thing to do is to talk to your employer (boss or HR) again. If there is nothing in the contract, a solution based on your personal agreement is probably the most obvious. A frank discussion should hopefully help.
I would also be surprised because it is deducted from my account.
